Writer's Workshop
At Lovett, writing is taught through Writer's Workshop. Writer's Workshop consists of a mini-lesson, independent writing time, and share/reflection. During the mini-lesson, there is a short, focused lesson where the teacher explicitly teaches a strategy or explores an issue that benefits the majority of the writers. This is typically done through modeling or discussions. After the mini-lesson, the students work in their writer's notebook, drafting entries that may later become published pieces. They are often encouraged to try out the strategy from the mini-lesson. The students are working at their own pace, and focusing on individual goals. Over the course of a unit, all students work through all stages of the writing process. During writing time, the teacher is conferring individually with students, providing support, feedback, and guidance. Writer's Workshop concludes with a share/reflection time where we all come back together to reflect on our writing from the day. A few students may share a portion of their writing in the author's chair, looking for feedback from their peers, or we all reflect on our writing successes and challenges from that day.
